Ski & snowboard

Maramures is the second most important ski destination in Romania when considering the number, the length and the variety of the slopes. There are four areas where slopes are developed: Suior-Mogosa, Cavnic, Borsa and Izvoare.

Suior-Mogosa

Situated on the north side of Mogosa Massif, Suior Resort is only 19 km (11.8 miles) away from Baia Mare and 1 km (0.6 miles) apart from Mogosa chalet. It has 3 runs totalizing 3600 m (11.811 Ft), night illumination for the main slope, artificial snow-making for two runs and ski rental facilities. Suior offers accommodation both at the base of the slope as well as at the top of slope, 1000 m (3300 Ft) high. www.suior.ro

Mogosa Chalet lays at the bottom of Mogosa Massif on the shores of Lake Bodi, 18 km (11 miles) from Baia Mare. Starting at the top of the massif, Moski is one of the most difficult runs in Maramures (33% average grade), offering spectacular landscapes due to its position, 1300 m (4250 Ft) high. At the end of this run one has the option to continue on Suior slopes or on Mogosa slope, thus arriving at Lake Bodi and Mogosa chalet. Mogosa Chalet has 67 beds but tourists can also choose to find accommodation in the nearby town of Baia Sprie 7km (4.3 miles) away. www.mogosa.ro

Cavnic

Located 30 km (18.5 miles) from Baia Mare, Cavnic has 7 runs grouped into two ski areas: Icoana and Roata, totalizing 7 km (4.3 miles) of slopes. Both ski areas have tubing runs and ski rental facilities. A large number of tourists are drawn here every year by the heavy snowfall, night skiing and numerous accommodation, both in the vicinity of the slopes as well as in the nearby Cavnic, Budesti and Ocna Sugatag. www.icoanacavnic.ro and www.superskicavnic.ro

Borsa

Borsa Resort is situated in the eastern part of Maramures County, 12 km (7.5 miles) from the town of Borsa and nestled between Rodna Mountains National Park (Biosphere Reserve) and Maramures Mountains Natural Park (the largest in Romania). 850 m (2800 Ft) high, the resort offers varied types of accommodation (hotels, guesthouses, chalets), restaurants and bars, and is highly preferrd by tourists for winter sports.

Izvoare

Izvoare slope is located 27 km (17 miles) from Baia Mare, on a volcanic plateau, 1000 m (3300 Ft) high, in a picturesque setting at the bottom of Ignis Peak.
